Homeowners need to take initiative to guard against floods

03 July 2008

Britons living in areas at risk of flooding have been advised to take action to ensure that they are not out of pocket in the event of a worst-case scenario coming to pass.

Coming on the back of the Pitt Review, in which Sir Michael Pitt pointed out the lessons that the country needs to learn from the 2007 floods, homeowners have been urged to ensure that their properties and the possessions in them are fully covered.

According to Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA), people are able to get cover if they take the necessary steps to ensure their properties are as well protected as possible.

He explained: "We have a scheme that our brokers sell for people in those flood prone areas and if they do fit defences then it means that they can get insurance and...if there are no claims after a couple of years their excess will be very low and the premiums should be very fair as well."

However, as well as fitting defences and taking out watertight home insurance, those living in at-risk areas may want to consider looking into safe storage facilities for their valuable possessions so as to give them greater peace of mind.
